Library of Celsus

Library of Celsus

This ancient Roman building is in Ephesus, Anatolia, which is now part of Selcuk, Turkey. It was built by Celsus’ son, Gaius Julius Aquila, to serve as a monumental tomb for his father. Today you can visit and walk through the ruins to see the two-story library that contains over 12,000 hand-written books. It is one of the largest book collections of its time.
